As the “Star-Spangled Banner” resolutely declares, the United States of America is “the land of the free and the home of the brave.” But who are the brave that we so proudly hail? It’s the men and women who honorably served on active duty in the armed forces of the United States. It’s fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, sons, and daughters who put their civilian lives on hold to defend this great country. These are our veterans. Because they bravely gave their blood, sweat, tears, and very lives, you get to enjoy your God-given rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

HONOR OUR VETERANS

The Stars and Stripes is powerful symbol of the country and the people our veterans courageously served. What better way to honor them than with the . . .

  • thirteen stripes, representing the thirteen original colonies that declared their independence from England in 1776
  • fifty stars, symbolizing the current fifty states
  • white stripes, signifying purity and innocence
  • red stripes, standing for valor and bravery
  • blue canton, expressing vigilance, perseverance, and justice

By law, veterans are honored with a US flag at their burial service. This special honors ceremony includes the playing of “Taps,” the folding of the flag, and the presentation of the flag to the next of kin. Discover the meaning behind the thirteen folds of the flag.
